Visa Applications to European Countries Surged in 2022: Top Nationalities Revealed

In 2022, European countries saw a significant increase in visa applications, with France being the primary recipient of these requests, receiving 1.9 million applications, a substantial jump from the previous year's 652,331.

Data from Schengen Statistics reveals that the top three countries for visa applications in 2022 were France, Spain, and Germany, all exceeding one million applications.


While the volume of applications varies among nationalities, Indians, Russians, Turks, and Saudi Arabians emerged as the top applicants for visas to European Union (EU) countries. These nationalities consistently appeared as key applicants across various European countries.


France:

  • Algeria led the list of visa applicants to France with 239,927 requests, followed by Moroccans with 161,045 applications.

  • India and Saudi Arabia came next with 138,643 and 120,630 applications, respectively.

  • Other top applicant nationalities for France included Turkey (115,114), Tunisia (95,515), the United Kingdom (91,702), Russia (64,309), Lebanon (46,072), and Cote d'Ivoire (45,993).


Spain:

  • Moroccans were the top applicants for Spanish visas in 2022, with 201,584 requests.

  • Russians followed with 166,893 applications, while Algerians had 102,656.

  • India and the United Kingdom had 80,098 and 61,005 applications, respectively.

  • Spain also received a significant number of visa applications from Spanish-speaking countries, including Ecuadorians (58,141) and Dominicans (second largest from the same region).

Germany:

  • Turkish nationals were the majority of visa applicants to Germany, with 223,699 applications, representing over 37% of all requests.

  • Indians came second with 76,352 applications.

  • Kosovo was the country of origin for 54,685 applicants, followed by Russians (48,895), Egyptians (43,253), and Saudi Arabians (41,753).


Italy:

  • Russians, Turks, and Saudi Arabians collectively filed around 241,561 visa applications for Italy in 2022.

  • Belarus, India, and South Africa also had notable numbers of applicants, with 36,416, 35,982, and 26,730 applications, respectively.


Greece:

  • Turks were the most frequent visa applicants to Greece, submitting 164,829 applications.

  • Russians and Indians followed with 75,830 and 27,457 applications, respectively.

  • Other top applicant nationalities included Armenians (27,457), Saudis (20,228), Brits (17,207), South Africans (11,982), Lebanese (11,156), and Egyptians (9,656).


Netherlands:

  • India led visa applications for the Netherlands with 52,616 requests, followed closely by Turks (48,807) and Filipinos (45,354).

  • Expats in the United Arab Emirates filed 19,774 applications, and South Africans and Saudi Arabians logged 19,649 and 18,804 applications, respectively.

  • Moroccans ranked eighth, and Suriname nationals and Brits also had significant application numbers.


Switzerland:

  • Indians dominated Swiss visa applications with 106,025 requests, accounting for 36.2% of all applications.

  • Kosovars, Thais, and Saudi Arabians had substantial numbers of applicants.

  • Emiratis, Turks, Russians, Brits, and Iranians were also among the top applicants.


Finland:

  • Russians overwhelmingly led visa applications for Finland, with 112,737 of the 149,189 applications.

  • Thais, Indians, Turks, Brits, Kosovars, Tunisians, Indonesians, Iranians, and Emiratis rounded out the list of top applicant nationalities.


Austria:

  • Indians, Saudi Arabians, and Russians were the top applicants for Austrian visas in 2022, with a total of 24,791, 16,695, and 13,292 applications, respectively.

  • Other top applicant nationalities included Turks, Thais, Emiratis, South Africans, Kuwaitis, Indonesians, and Iranians.


Portugal:

  • Applicants from the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), including Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique, and Sao Tome and Principe, were the primary source of visa applications to Portugal.

  • Angolans filed 43,567 applications, followed by Cape Verdeans with 15,710.

  • Saudi Arabians, Mozambique, Brits, South Africans, Sao Tome and Principe, Americans, and Russians also had significant numbers of visa applicants.


These statistics highlight the diverse and robust visa application trends across European countries in 2022, with various nationalities seeking entry for tourism, business, and other purposes.
