In a landmark decision, the Cabinet of Ministers in Cyprus has given its nod to the National Maritime Spatial Plan, marking a pivotal step towards the comprehensive development of the nation's maritime sector. Deputy Minister of Shipping, Marina Hadjimanoli, elucidated that the plan intricately maps out the spatiotemporal distribution of both current and future activities within the maritime waters of the Republic of Cyprus.
The overarching objective of this strategic plan is to fortify and advocate for sustainable development at sea, adopting an ecosystem-based approach that takes into consideration social, economic, environmental, and cultural dimensions. Hadjimanoli emphasized the significance of fostering the coexistence of diverse activities and uses within the maritime domain.
"Through Maritime Spatial Planning, our Republic aspires to contribute to the sustainable development of energy sectors at sea, encompassing Renewable Energy Sources, maritime transport, fishing, aquaculture, and tourism," stated Hadjimanoli, underscoring the multifaceted nature of the plan.
Importantly, the plan incorporates a holistic perspective by addressing various activities, including raw material extraction, protection of underwater antiquities, environmental conservation, and measures to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The Minister highlighted that the draft of the Maritime Spatial Plan encompasses both existing and proposed marine projects in the energy sector, encompassing vital initiatives such as hydrocarbon exploration sites, the East Med gas pipeline, and the EuroAsia Interconnector project.
Crucially, provisions have been laid out in the plan for the strategic zoning of the Energy Centre, encompassing all future planning and energy infrastructure. This forward-looking approach reflects the government's commitment to fostering a sustainable and harmonious coexistence of maritime activities, ensuring the long-term prosperity and resilience of Cyprus' maritime sector.
The approval of the National Maritime Spatial Plan is seen as a decisive move that not only outlines the trajectory of maritime development but also underscores Cyprus' commitment to responsible and sustainable practices in the maritime domain. With a comprehensive strategy in place, the nation is poised to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the evolving maritime landscape, positioning itself as a key player in the sustainable development of its maritime resources.
