Entrepreneurs, freelancers, and remote workers—often referred to as digital nomads—are constantly seeking destinations that support both their professional and personal lifestyles.

Spain Named Top Destination for Digital Nomads in 2025

According to VisaGuide’s Digital Nomad Index for 2025, Spain has been ranked as the best destination for digital nomads, excelling in key areas that cater to these modern workers.

Spain topped the index by fulfilling multiple criteria essential for digital nomads, particularly its tourism popularity, which enables professionals to enjoy an engaging lifestyle while maintaining productivity. The ranking system considers six key factors that determine how suitable a country is for digital nomads.

The Six Key Factors for Digital Nomad Destinations

  1. Internet Speed – A stable and fast internet connection is crucial for digital nomads to work efficiently, making this one of the primary factors in the ranking.

  2. Taxation Policies – The cost of taxation plays a significant role, as digital nomads evaluate whether they can benefit from tax-free periods or low tax rates in their chosen country. "Taxation can often be a ‘make it or break it’ condition for digital nomads seeking a great destination for themselves and their careers," states the report.

  3. Income Requirements – Many countries set a minimum income threshold for digital nomads applying for visas, making this a crucial consideration.

  4. Cost of Living – The affordability of accommodation, food, and general expenses heavily impacts a digital nomad’s decision to settle in a country.

  5. Healthcare – Access to quality healthcare is a priority for digital nomads, as they evaluate what medical services are available in a potential destination.

  6. Tourism Popularity – A lively and engaging environment is important for digital nomads who seek an inspiring and entertaining lifestyle.

Based on these factors, Spain secured the top position, particularly due to its strong tourism appeal. Following Spain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) ranked second, largely thanks to its fast internet speeds and 0% taxation policy.

Montenegro and the Bahamas took third and fourth place, respectively, while Hungary was ranked fifth. Canada secured the sixth spot, with its low minimum income requirements contributing to its high score. Romania, which placed seventh, stood out for its affordable living costs.

Portugal and Brazil were ranked eighth and ninth, both benefiting from low taxation, strong tourism appeal, and minimal income requirements for digital nomad visas. Curacao completed the top ten, being among the few nations with similar taxation benefits.

With more countries adapting their policies to attract remote workers, the 2025 Digital Nomad Index highlights the growing global trend of nations competing to provide the best conditions for location-independent professionals.
