The Netherlands gaming authority, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), has released its 2023 Gambling Market Scan, providing detailed information about the country's gambling market in 2022, which marked the first full year of legal online gambling in the local market.
The report reveals that the overall gross gambling revenues for 2022 reached €3.4 billion, reflecting a notable increase of €1.4 billion compared to the previous year. However, it's important to note that the figures from the previous year were impacted by closures resulting from the global pandemic.
Online Casino Growth: The Gambling Market Scan underscores a significant shift from physical casino gambling to online betting, as the online gambling industry accounted for 31% of all market revenue for the year. Casino games, whether land-based or online, generated €1.9 billion in revenue throughout the year, up from the €1.5 billion reported in 2019, prior to the pandemic. This growth was primarily driven by online casino gaming, as revenues for the land-based casino industry actually declined by 30% when compared to 2019.
The report anticipates that retail casino revenues may witness further growth throughout 2023 as the industry slowly recovers from the closures experienced over the previous two years.
Market Share by Sector: Casino gaming emerged as the most popular form of gambling in 2022, commanding a 56% market share. Within this segment, 33% represented land-based casinos, while 23% came through online casinos.
Lottery gaming held a smaller share of the market (34% in 2022, compared to 57% in 2021) than in previous years, yet it exhibited marginal growth.
Sports betting secured the smallest market share at 9% in 2022 (2% land-based, 8% online), a significant increase from the 4% recorded in the previous year. Despite its relatively smaller share, the sports betting industry enjoyed substantial growth, with revenues reaching €319 million, a substantial 262.5% increase from the previous year's total of €88 million.
Customer Spending: The report highlights that Dutch consumers spend, on average, 14% less than their European counterparts on gambling activities. In 2022, Dutch individuals spent an average of €258 on games of chance at licensed providers. This marked an increase from the €158 spent in 2021 and €221 in 2019. Although a higher percentage of gambling spending is attributed to land-based gambling, specific figures were not provided in the report.
Another recent report revealed that approximately 417,000 people in the Netherlands gamble online each month, with around 826,000 active customer accounts registered with online gambling providers.
The Netherlands' gambling market continues to evolve and adapt with the increasing popularity of online gambling and changing consumer preferences.
