Indian Visa Applications Surge in 2024, European Destinations Remain Popular

"India continues to show a strong demand for international travel, and it’s clear that this robust momentum will persist in 2025," said Yummi Talwar, Chief Operating Officer – South Asia, VFS Global.

Indian travellers have been applying for visas to various countries, with European destinations being the most popular. France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom were among the top choices. Other frequently visited countries include Canada, China, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and the United States. Data reveals that in 2023, Indian travellers were the third-largest group of visa applicants to the Schengen Area, submitting a total of 966,687 applications. Switzerland received the most applications from Indian citizens, processing 189,646, which accounted for 19.6 per cent of the total. France was the second-most preferred destination, with 176,237 applications or 18.2 per cent, followed by Germany, which received 132,825 applications, making up 13.7 per cent of the total. Altogether, Switzerland, France, and Germany accounted for 498,708 applications, representing 51.5 per cent of all Schengen visa requests from India.

Talwar also issued a warning about fraudulent websites and social media accounts falsely claiming to be VFS Global. These platforms are being used for illicit purposes, and applicants are urged to verify the legitimacy of any website they use to apply for visas or obtain information. "We encourage applicants to apply for their visas well in advance to avoid the last-minute rush and ensure a smooth travel experience," Talwar said.

Travellers are advised to book flights and accommodations early and carefully monitor their travel dates to avoid exceeding the 90-day limit for short-term stays. With high demand and limited appointment slots, submitting visa applications as early as possible remains essential.
