This week, House Speaker Annita Demetriou reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the Cypriot shipping industry during a meeting with a delegation from the Cyprus Shipowners’ Association (CSA). Demetriou assured the delegation of her and the House’s dedication to aiding the CSA in every possible way.
The House released a statement indicating that the meeting was attended by CSA President Andreas Hadjiyiannis, Vice President Polys Hadjioannou, and Director General Michael Filippou. The discussions focused on key issues such as the challenges facing Cypriot shipping, EU policies regarding pollutants, the future of the shipping industry, the necessity of strengthening the Cypriot register, and general economic issues affecting both the local and broader economy.
The potential benefits for Cypriot shipping and the economy as a whole, arising from a possible resolution of the Cyprus problem, were also explored during the meeting.
Demetriou underscored the significant importance that Cyprus places on the further development of its shipping sector, emphasizing the sector's role in the country's economic future.
“Demetriou expressed her commitment, and that of the House, to assist in every way possible in the support of the CSA,” the statement read. Additionally, she reiterated her and the House’s readiness to provide comprehensive backing for the CSA’s activities, reflecting the country’s priority on bolstering the shipping industry for the benefit of both communities.
