Government Employment in Cyprus Sees 3.9% Growth in 2024

Government employment in Cyprus has experienced a 3.9 per cent rise during the first eight months of 2024, compared to the same period last year, according to a report released this week by the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat).

The report highlighted that by August 2024, the total number of government employees reached 52,452.


From January to August 2024, the average total government employment stood at 54,227, representing an increase of 2,019 individuals, or 3.9 per cent, when compared to the corresponding period in 2023.


Breaking down the numbers for August 2024, the civil service employed 23,314 individuals.


This included 12,035 permanent employees, 4,222 employees on indefinite contracts, 1,209 on fixed-term contracts, and 5,848 hourly wage earners. Permanent employees made up the largest segment of the civil service workforce, accounting for 51.6 per cent, while fixed-term contract employees constituted just 5.2 per cent of the total workforce in this sector.

In the educational service, there were 15,193 employees as of August 2024. Among them were 11,883 permanent employees, 1,155 on indefinite contracts, 2,013 fixed-term employees, and 142 hourly wage earners. Permanent employees also formed the majority in this sector, making up 78.2 per cent of the workforce. In contrast, hourly wage earners represented only 0.9 per cent of the workforce, the smallest group within this category.


Similarly, the security forces saw a total of 13,945 employees, with permanent employees once again being the majority. Specifically, there were 8,354 permanent employees, 4,547 on indefinite contracts, 296 fixed-term employees, and 748 hourly wage earners. Permanent employees comprised 59.9 per cent of the total workforce, while fixed-term employees accounted for just 2.1 per cent, the smallest share in this group.
