Germany is set to introduce temporary internal border controls with France ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games to ensure security during the event. Although the measures have not yet been implemented, German authorities have emphasized that the controls will be in effect for the entire duration of the Olympic Games in Paris.
The German Ministry of Interior stated, "Internal border controls at the German land border with France in the run-up to and during the Olympic Games in Paris in order to ensure the highest level of security in close cooperation with the French authorities."
Federal Minister of Interior Nancy Faeser announced the country’s plans, indicating that she will soon order land border controls with France. She further assured that German authorities will collaborate closely with France to ensure everyone feels safe during the Olympics. Faeser also noted that even after the measures are lifted, targeted controls will continue.
"I will order internal border controls at the German-French land border in the coming weeks in order to do everything together with France to ensure the security of the Olympic Games in Paris. After the European Championship and the Olympics, there will continue to be intensive undercover surveillance with targeted controls," stated Germany’s Minister of Interior, Nancy Faeser.
The Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games will take place from July 26, 2024, to August 11, 2024, with an expected influx of over 16 million visitors to France.
Currently, Germany has internal border controls with Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, which were introduced to ensure security during the European Football Championship. However, these controls will cease to be effective from July 19, 2024, as explained by the German Minister of Interior. Despite lifting the controls, German authorities will continue targeted checks at these checkpoints, similar to the period before the championship.
Additionally, Germany maintains effective border controls with Austria, Czechia, Poland, and Switzerland. These measures will remain in place until December 15, 2024, except for Austria, where border controls will end on November 11, 2024.
