Germany Sees Surge in Work Visas as Demand for Foreign Labour Reaches New Heights

As one of the European Union’s economic powerhouses, Germany has maintained its status as a top destination for foreign workers, issuing a substantial number of work visas over the past few years. From the beginning of 2021 through the end of 2024, the country granted a total of 579,000 work visas to international applicants.

Throughout this four-year span, the figures reveal a clear upward trend in Germany’s reliance on foreign labour to meet the demands of its dynamic job market. In 2021, Germany issued 97,000 work visas—the lowest number within this timeframe. That figure rose sharply in 2022, when 152,000 work visas were approved in response to significant labour shortages.

The momentum continued into 2023, with 158,000 visas granted. The peak came in 2024, when Germany issued 172,000 work visas—the highest number in this period. While the year-over-year increases may seem modest, the overall growth from 2021 to 2024 is substantial. Data show that Germany issued approximately 77 per cent more employment visas in 2024 than it did three years earlier.

Germany’s Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, highlighted this progress during a recent address reviewing the country’s migration policies over the current legislative period. She expressed satisfaction with the steps Germany has taken to attract global talent and skilled professionals to support the country’s workforce needs.

“We have increased skilled immigration by 77 per cent since 2021. Today, we are a country that invests more in integration and is more attractive to talented and qualified workers and skilled workers from all over the world,” said Minister Faeser.

She reaffirmed the importance of immigration to Germany’s future, stating, “Germany is a country of immigration and must remain so,” and emphasized that foreign workers play a vital role in securing the country’s long-term viability.

Despite the positive numbers and encouraging statements from government officials, the visa process continues to pose challenges for applicants. Foreign workers frequently voice frustration over lengthy bureaucratic procedures and extended waiting times during the visa application process. Many report being left in limbo for months, awaiting decisions that can significantly affect their lives and careers.

While Germany has made strides in increasing skilled immigration, concerns from prospective workers suggest that the system still requires improvements to ensure timely processing and reduce the administrative burden for those seeking to contribute to the German economy.
