The Spanish autonomous community of Extremadura has earmarked €2 million to attract digital nomads from around the globe. This initiative is part of a broader effort to stimulate Extremadura's economy by drawing in high-skilled professionals.

Extremadura Allocates €2 Million to Attract Digital Nomads

Extremadura currently has the lowest population density in Spain, with only 26 inhabitants per square kilometer. The region offers a high quality of life, characterized by its natural beauty and exceptional gastronomy. Guillermo Santamaría, the Minister of Economy, Employment, and Digital Transformation, emphasized the potential economic benefits of attracting digital nomads. "Attracting these high-skilled professionals with international incomes will have a very positive impact on our economy. They will boost local consumption, enrich regional talent and create significant networks and opportunities," he stated.

Santamaría acknowledged that the region has faced transportation and communication challenges but highlighted Extremadura's competitive edge in digital infrastructure. "We are above the national average in fiber optic coverage with 93 per cent, 97 per cent in 4G mobile coverage and between 75 per cent and 80 per cent in 5G coverage," he noted.

To qualify for the program, applicants must have resided outside Extremadura for at least six months before registering residency. They must also establish their habitual residence in communities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants for a minimum of two years. Additionally, applicants from outside Spain are required to obtain a legal identification number.

According to a report from Traveling Lifestyle, selected women and men under the age of 30 will initially be awarded €10,000. Men older than 30 will receive €8,000. After completing the initial two-year period, women and men under 30 who extend their stay for another year will receive €5,000, while men over 30 will receive €4,000 for an additional year.

The call for applications will remain open until the allocated €2 million is exhausted, according to regional authorities.
