Bulgaria's decision to bar two Russian citizens accused of espionage from entering the European Union until 2029 marks a significant development in the realm of international security. The individuals, identified as Vladimir Nikolayevich Gorochkin, aged 39, and Tatiana Anatolievna Gorochkina, aged 37, allegedly operated as legal spies for Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service, according to assertions made by the Bulgarian Agency for National Security.
In light of the perceived security risks posed not only to Bulgaria but to all EU member states, Bulgarian authorities have enacted a stringent measure by imposing a five-year ban on the accused individuals. The Bulgarian Agency for National Security explicitly stated, "A ban on entry and residence in the territory of the member states of the European Union was imposed for a period of five years."
Official reports divulged that Gorochkin and Gorochkina had been residing in Bulgaria under assumed identities, passing themselves off as Bulgarian nationals under the aliases Denis Rashkov and Diana Rashkova. They possessed documentation supporting these fabricated identities. The Agency corroborated suspicions that the couple was engaged in unlawful intelligence activities on behalf of the Russian Federation.
According to the Bulgarian Agency for National Security, "The main purpose of the presence of Vladimir Gorochkin and Tatyana Gorochkina in our country was to obtain the necessary Bulgarian identity documents and credible biographical data, confirming the authenticity of the same, which they would later use to carry out intelligence activities outside the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria."
While confirming the departure of the two individuals from Bulgarian territory, authorities refrained from disclosing the duration of their residency in the country or their current whereabouts. The decision underscores the ongoing concerns regarding Russia's alleged attempts to destabilize the EU and compromise the security of its member states.
The protracted conflict in Ukraine has prompted the EU to impose stringent restrictions on Russia. These measures encompass over 1,700 Russian individuals and 400 entities deemed responsible for undermining Ukraine's independence. Individuals included in the sanction list are categorically prohibited from entering EU territory and are subjected to asset freezes.
