Brazil Approves Extensive List of Sports for Fixed-Odds Betting Ahead of Market Opening

A significant array of sports, particularly football, has been officially approved for fixed-odds sports betting in Brazil, just under 24 hours before the market is set to open. Local reports also indicate that numerous licenses have been granted in preparation for this regulatory shift.

Brazil Approves Extensive List of Sports for Fixed-Odds Betting Ahead of Market Opening

According to the Ministry of Sports, a variety of popular sporting activities have received authorization from the Brazilian government, allowing them to be eligible for betting as the country prepares to regulate its sports betting market in the new year. The approved list includes widely popular sports such as football, basketball, boxing, baseball, hockey, cricket, tennis, and surfing. Additionally, niche offerings such as various martial arts, skateboarding, diving, sailing, skiing, and equestrian sports have also been recognized. The comprehensive list encompasses all sports and disciplines acknowledged by the International Olympic Committee, along with a significant number of Paralympic sports. The inclusion of football is particularly noteworthy, as it is expected to attract the majority of prospective bettors in Brazil.

Notably, according to H2GC, football constitutes 86% of sports betting gross gaming revenue (GGR) in Brazil.

Gaming License

Moreover, reports from Brazil indicate that multiple gambling operators have received approval for their licenses related to both online gambling and sports wagering. So far, a total of 68 licenses have been granted for a mix of local and internationally recognized operators, with Novibet confirming its approval for an online gaming license earlier today.

For sports wagering licenses, a total of 67 have been awarded, which includes 14 definitive licenses and 52 provisional approvals, although this number may be subject to change.

This announcement comes on the heels of reports that Brazil began finalizing its first 71 online gambling applications earlier this month, with Salsa Gator confirming last week that it had received GLI certification for online gaming.
